Lady Doak College

I. Work shop for I UG students

Communication skills:  The students were enabled to strengthen their listening skills, comprehension skills and graphical interpretation skills. Development of such skills helps the students to communicate Physics with interest and enthusiasm.

Numerical skills : The students were trained to solve problems on conversion of units, mechanics, electronics and electromagnetism by enabling them to relate theory and problems and enhance critical thinking. They are made to unlearn the conventional method of solving problems.

Laboratory skills:  A set of instruments are identified as basic measuring devices for all the measurements to be done in optics, mechanics and electromagnetism etc in her higher semesters. Therefore an intense effort is made to familiarize all the students in doing l experiments.

Spoken English:  I year students attended a workshop on functional English. The resource persons are from “Speech  Masters india “-The quality  English training institute. The course enabled the students to gain confidence in speaking English and knowledge in correct usage of the language to communicate Physics.

II. Internship training

As the field of alternative energy sources grows due to increasing demand for renewable energy not dependent on imported fossil fuels, the need for those trained in solar electric is becoming more important than ever. These people are the ones who design and install smaller, solar energy systems used to generate electricity in individual homes and businesses. The renewable energy sector is looking for competent people who have knowledge of solar energy and  technology and its energy. The need of the hour is to create awareness about the renewable energy resources among students. The department of Physics has taken the initiative to train the students to fabricate and to study various solar gadgets.

Twenty of our UG students had a hands on training at the Renewable Energy Center Mithradham ,Aluva , Kerala and another Twenty five have taken training at Alter Energy System, Madurai. These students were able to design and install small solar energy systems to generate electricity in their homes. The department boasts of a candle making unit which is in active use throughout the year.We have also fabricated a solar vegetable drier.

III.Summer Training

The department encourages the students to attend summer training programs at various research institutions to acquire knowledge and update with the research activities in those  institutions.

  • Ms.Sobha  and Ms Abirami are pursuing their M.Phil dissertation work  in the Materials Science Department,IGCAR , Kalpakkam.
  • Ms.  Jeyakarthika of I PG student has been selected for Summer Training in  Physics & Chemistry (STIP- 13) from MAY 27th To   JULY 5th  2013 at Department of Atomic Energy,  Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam - 603 102, Tamil Nadu.
  • Ms. T.Felsia Syndrella of II UG student has been selected for School in Physics and Astrophysics during 13th to 24th May, 2013 at IIA, Kodaikanal Observatory, Kodikanal

IV.Enhancement of infrastructure:

The department owns two telescopes, efficient binoculars, high power torch light and a DSLR cannon camera through which they get an insight to understand the astronomical concepts.
