A major challenge before the Indian higher education system is to enhance the quality and quantity of education delivery in the country. Hence there was a felt need for major innovations and reforms to meet these challenges and to achieve excellence in education along with equity and access. The national target too is to enhance the gross enrollment ratio from 10% to 15%.

In order to expand the reach of education with social inclusivity a new scheme known as Convergence Scheme was jointly conceived by University Grants Commission (UGC), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), Distance Education Council (DEC) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) under the guidance of the Ministry of Human Resources Development. It operates by converging conventional University System and Open and Distance Learning system.

The scheme focuses on access and equity issues and aims at enhancing the quality and quantity of education delivery in the context of social dimensions of the country, with a thrust on capacity building and strengthening of the conventional University and collegiate education system.

Lady Doak College was selected by Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi (IGNOU), to offer the new scheme. The college signed a MoU with IGNOU in April 2008. Since then several courses are being offered depending on the demand and interest of the students.
