Service Learning - Computer Science Department

Service Learning

Service-learning is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting, frequently youth service, throughout the community.

A method under which students or participants learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that is conducted in and meets the needs of a community; is coordinated with an elementary school, secondary school, institution of higher education, or community service program, and with the community; and helps foster civic responsibility; and that is integrated into and enhances the academic curriculum of the students, or the educational components of the community service program in which the participants are enrolled; and provides structured time for the students or participants to reflect on the service experience.

The community service in computer science education has started gaining ground in the recent past.

Need for Integration of technology:

  • Benefit of the society
  • The potential to engage students in a real life application of the theoretical computer science models they learn in the classroom.
  • Reinforces their own learning there by preparing themselves for a professional work force.

The power and potential of community service in computer science education is demonstrated through successful programs such as

  • Web based community projects (Computer science Projects in Community Service)
  • DTP Training.

These programs, linked to the web resources, provide outstanding examples of integrated study , interdisciplinary service-learning within computer science education.

Web Resources developed for community enhancement

  • Marketing the SHG’s (Self Help Group) product through online – Thirupalai Village [2005]
